BOX SCORE

LONG BEACH— Mariko Strickland scored in the 23rd minute as Long Beach State (11-5-0, 4-1-0 Big West) remained in first place after dominating visiting UC Riverside (8-7-1, 2-3-1 Big West) 1-0 on a windy Sunday afternoon.

The eventual game-winner was set up when Sahar Haghdan passed it, in traffic, to Strickland on the left flank. Strickland then fired a shot from just inside the box, which found the lower left corner for the only score of the contest.

The 49ers would not let UCR anywhere the near the net all day long, as starting junior middle fielder Dana Farquhar started on the backline for the first time in her career, and along with veterans Sara Baca and Amanda Perry, combined to not let a shot on goal, as LBSU's offense outshot UCR 17-to-3.

From the get-go, the 49ers also cornered the market, producing their first two corner kicks over the first five minutes and getting nine on the day.

LBSU also had seven shots on goal, which resulted in saves in the 54th and 55th minutes off of shots by Hayley Bolt and Strickland and another in the 82nd on a shot by Katelyn Quaresma.

The 49ers play at UC Irvine on Friday at 7 p.m. in their only contest next week.
