Fullerton Wins on Throw-In in 62nd Minute
LONG BEACH— Jenae Gibbens scored on an uncontested throw-in in the 62nd minute to lead CS Fullerton (8-6-1, 3-2-0 Big West) to a 1-0 victory over host Long Beach State (10-5-0, 3-1-0 Big West) on a warm Friday afternoon. The winning score was set up when Gibbens threw it in from the 15 yard line and the ball found its way through a 49er and a Titan at eye level of goalkeeper Liz Ramos, after players jockeyed for position inside the box at 62:10. The Titans, who snapped the 49ers four-match winning streak, then played back, as LBSU had could not connect on any of their attempts over the final 10 minutes. The 49ers end up outshooting the Titans 13-to-8 in the contest in an evenly played match. In a scoreless first half, LBSU outshot the Titans 6-to-4, using solid footwork to produce three corner kicks. The Titans had two chances on goal, as in the 18th minute Gibbons missed a header off a corner kick and in the 30th minute Christina Murillo's shot went off the side bar. Defender Jenn Brooks played a solid first 30 minutes as a backline defender, keeping the ball away from the Titan offense for the first third of the contest. Forward Kristen Kiefer, once the Big West's leading scorer, played for the first time since the conference opener for the 49ers. The 49ers remain at George Allen Field on Sunday, hosting UC Riverside at noon. |
