CS Northridge Proves Too Tough for the 49ers
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State (4-14, 1-3 Big West) battled foul trouble in the first half and then CS Northridge's Jamie McCaa hit two key second half three-pointers and scored 24 points as the Big West's top offense, CS Northridge (7-10, 4-1 Big West) woke up from a first half slumber, to go away and win 73-63 on Saturday evening. Karina Figueroa, after tying her career-high two nights ago, finished with a career-best 27 points as the 49ers shot just 35 percent for the contest. CSUN shot 50 percent in the second half and 41 percent for the contest, as LaJoyce King added 15 points and 14 rebounds. McCaa, who did not miss a jumper in the second half, finished 8-of-13 from the field, hitting 5-of-7 three-point attempts. She also grabbed eight rebounds The Beach had a chance to close to within one, but missed two opportunities down 47-43 midway through the second half, as the CSUN converted on the next opportunity and then used a 13-7 run to lead 60-50 at the five minute mark on another McCaa three-pointer. The 49ers started the half on a nice run, 15-8 to start, leading 41-39 on a fastbreak layup by O'Brien, but CSUN scored six unanswered to lead 45-41 on a McCaa three-pointer at 12:43 and never trailed again. CS Northridge took a 31-26 at the half, as the 49ers battled foul trouble with three starters on the bench with foul trouble. CSUN converted 10-of-15 from the charity stripe in the first half as a Tulikihihifo basket at 2:16 extended the lead to 29-22, in what was an evenly played first half. Both teams shot in the low 30's. After an early 8-2 lead by the Matadors, Figueroa's two free throws at 10:40 capped a 9-0 run and gave the 49ers an 11-8 lead. The 49ers take to the road next week, traveling across the Orange Curtain to take on CS Fullerton on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then traveling to the area formerly known as "The 909," when they play at UC Riverside next Saturday at 5 p.m. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
