49ers Win Season Opener 1-0 EUGENE, OR-- A stifling Long Beach State defense (1-0-0) was enough to lead the No. 28-ranked 49ers to a season opening win at the University of Oregon (0-1-0), as Dana Farquhar was the benefactor of a corner kick to lead The Beach to a 1-0 lead. At 69:57, a corner kick by Kim Silos went into the box, went off the body of freshman Sarah Strohl, and Farquhar was in the right place at the right time, as it landed past goalkeeper Jesse Chatfield's hand into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The 49ers ended up outshooting the Ducks 15-to-9, and not allowing a shot on goal (the only one) until the 83rd minute. Oregon made a last ditch effort in the 87th minute with consecutive corner kicks with LBSU up by a single goal. The 49ers controlled the game for much of the first half, outshooting the Ducks 10-to-3 over the first 45 minutes. Long Beach State played a player-up following a red card by Nicole Dobrynski against LBSU's Kristin Childers at 35:02. Silos missed the ensuing penalty kick as it remained 0-0 into halftime. Previously, the 49ers had a chance to take an early lead as Yeraldy Hurtado missed a potential header in the 14th missing and Duck goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield saved a bullet by Farquhar in the 21st minute. Faquhar had entered moments earlier before getting her first shot of the game. Starting defender Tiffany Vaught left the game in the 36th minute with a left knee injury. She is day-to-day. The 49ers travel to Portland State for a noon matchup in the Rose City on Sunday. |
