49ers-Azusa Pacific Tie in Scrimmage LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 28-ranked Long Beach State's defense clamped down on last year's top-rated NAIA team, Azusa Pacific, in tying the Cougars 0-0 in a 90-minute scrimmage on Saturday afternoon. The 49ers, who set the school-record the last two years for shutouts, held APU without a shot for 61 minutes following three shots in the opening seven minutes. The Beach had their chances throughout the contest, outshooting Azusa Pacific 9-to-6 in the contest and 9-to-3 after the opening minutes. "This was the end of a very long set of double days," said third-year Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia. "Sunday will be their first day off. We got better as the game went on. We did a very good job defensively, but on ball, we need to improve." In the first half, Kim Silos twice tried to give the 49ers an early lead, missing a shot in the box from a pass from Dana Farquhar in the 18th minute and then serving a ball into Hayley Bolt in the 27th minute, which Bolt mis-headed. Long Beach State also had three corner kicks with from the 75th to 77th minutes, but each time could not convert. APU's best chance at scoring came in the 72nd minute, when Jolie Nitta missed a shot wide right. The 49ers open the season August 25 at the University of Oregon and have
their home opener September 1 against Southern Utah. The Beach are currenlty
selling a season ticket plan for $30 for its six-match home schedule.
