49ers Come Within Five Points of Sweep NORTHRIDGE, CA-- Team Long Beach State came within five points of sweeping the multi-event Big West Championships, following a career day from Jaime Cuthbert-Allen and a first place finish from Chris Richardson. Richardson, in his first season at The Beach and already the school-record holder in the event (7605), scored 7194 points on Saturday and Sunday to become the first 49er man to win the decathlon since 1999. Richardson won the javelin and discus on Sunday to overcome a 16-point deficit and finished with the second-best point total in school-history. Cuthbert-Allen had made history earlier in the day, scoring a career-best 4955 points in the heptathlon and finishing just five points shy of CS Northridge's LaShana Verdon. Cuthbert-Allen tied for second, as her mark remained third-best all-time. It was also the best finish for the 49er senior at the championships, as she previously finished fourth (2004) and sixth (2005). Lauren Reimer finished in fifth place with the sixth-best total in school-history at 4799. It was the first time in school-history the 49ers have had all-conference (top-three) finishes in both the men's and women's multi-event championships in the same year. The Big West Championships continue next weekend in Northridge. |
