Ciarelli Named Athlete of the Week
IRVINE, CA-- Katelyn Ciarelli (Huntington Beach) became the latest Long Beach State field athlete to be named Big West Conference Field Athlete of the Week, earning the honor this week after qualifying for her third-straight NCAA Regional with a throw of 158'7" in the discus. Ciarelli has set personal-best's in three of her four events this season, ranking in the Big West top-10 in the discus (158'7"), hammer (159'3"), javelin (126'1") and shot put (37'7.25"). Her discus mark puts her second in the conference, while her hammer is fifth. So far this season, nine times, a field athlete of the week has come out of Long Beach State, in a broad range of event groups from the jumps (John Temidara and Ronald Carter) to the throws (Kim Heinz, Kristina Price, Rob Jennings and Ciarelli) to the pole vault (Jill Reynolds). The 49ers began their run at the Big West Championships this weekend when the multi-eventers travel to CS Northridge to begin the two-weekend conference championship on May 5.
