49ers Head to Big West Championships Part II

49ers Head Back to Northridge for Big West LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State track and field will head back to the San Fernando Valley and CS Northridge for the second round of the Big West Championships, after Chris Richardson won the decathlon and Jaime Cuthbert-Allen and Lauren Reimer finished second and fifth in the heptathlon. Currently the 49er men are in first place with 10 points, two points ahead of the Matadors, while the women are in second with 11 points, six points behind CSUN. The 49ers feature 18 women and 22 men ranked in the top-five in their respective events. The men's team are serious contenders for a conference title, the school's first since the mid-1970's, while the women's team should finish towards the top of the pack after battling injuries all season. The top three places at the two-day meet, which begins on Friday, will earn all-conference honors. The men feature four athletes who lead the conference, in sprinter Charles Lewis in the 200-meter, John Temidara in the triple jump, Richardson in the long jump and Robert Jennings in the discus. Temidara is in the top-seven in three different categories, where he is second in the high jump and seventh in the long jump, while Richardson also has the fourth-best javelin toss. Lewis posts the third-best 400-meter time, while Jennings has the second-best hammer throw. Former walk-on Ronald Carter is the only other 49er male to post two top-five performances, ranking second in the triple and fifth in the long jump. Carter's mark in the the triple jump is 18th nationally. On the women's side, Jill Reynolds has the league's best pole vault, while Kim Heinz' school-record in the javelin, is also top knotch. Heinz is the first of three 49ers ranked in the top-five in the javelin, as her mark stands 28th nationally. The 49er women have a number of runner-up marks, in the steeple chase (Danielle Miller), 10,000-meter (Meredith Kramon), high jump (Emily Forsythe) and discus (Katelyn Ciarelli). Sprinter Jasmine Winfield could be the most honored 49er woman this weekend, ranking in the top-five in the 200 and 400-meter races, where she is third and in the 100-meter, where she is fourth. |
