49er Men Win, Women Second at BW Challenge IRVINE, CA-- The Long Beach State track and field program won the Big West Challenge on the men's side and finished second to UC Santa Barbara on the women's side, as Chris Richardson posted the sixth-best long jump in the country among the 49ers 14 combined individual titles. Kristina Price led a strong contingent of throwers, sweeping the shot put, discus and hammer, as the 49ers won seven of eight throwing events across the board. "I feel like I have like 1000 things to tell you, so many good things happened today," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "The men had a really good meet and showed they are in a position to do something big, while the women did not have a great meet, in part because of injuries, but still battled with the defending conference champions, UC Santa Barbara. There were strong performances across the board from our entire conference, and I have to take my hat off to CS Fullerton, whose results don't show how strong a meet they had." Richardson completed a most successful day on the track, winning the long jump with a mark of 25'0.75", and finishing in the top-five in the high jump, 110-meter hurdles and javelin. He also had a personal-best in the pole vault, as next week's meet at Mt. SAC will give the junior is first opportunity to qualify for the decathlon at NCAA's. Robert Jennings scored a personal-best in the hammer with a throw of 191'0", which places him 10th all-time at LBSU with the win, while the nationally-ranked tandem of John Temidara and Ronald Carter finished 1-2 in the triple jump. Tyler McCoy qualified for regionals with a personal-best 209'0", as the 49ers swept the javelin following Kim Heinz' win on the women's side. In fact, the women posted the top-four marks in the event. Ed Cornell also won, posting a season-best of 173'3" in the discus, while Charles Lewis (200m), Mario Cobian (800m) and the 4x400-meter men's relay team also took home wins. Jasmine Winfield won her second-ever 100-meter with a time of 11.99, while she finished second in the 200m (24.51) and was part of the winning 4x100-meter relay race. Jaclyn Pedersen continued a solid senior campaign, winning the 800-meter and joining fourth place finisher Nicole Blalock as Big West qualifiers in the event. Some unexpected results came from Dylan Jaedtke (steeple) and Brendan Pena (pole vault), who both finished second. LBSU scored 201.5 points on the men's side, easily beating UC Santa Barbara (165), UC Irvine (156.5) and CS Fullerton (156). On the women's side, the Gauchos scored 201 points, followed by LBSU's 178, CS Fullerton (165) and UC Irvine (122). |
