Big West Challenge This Saturday FULL STATISTICS
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State track and field continues its season with the Big West Challenge on Friday, hosted by UC Irvine, as the meet provides a glimpse of next month's conference championships. Four of the conference's eight teams will be represented; the 49ers, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and CS Fullerton. If current top-three rankings amongst individual performers are any indication of this week's meet, the 49ers are the favorite, featuring 12 top-three marks in the Big West on the men's side and another 12 on the women's. For the men, UC Irvine (8 marks), CS Fullerton (7) and UC Santa Barbara (6) follow The Beach, while on the women's side, the Titans have 11 marks, followed by UC Santa Barbara (5) and UC Irvine (3). The 49ers already have put forth 18 marks on the top-10 list this outdoor season, including school-records in the javelin (Kim Heinz), 10,000-meters (Meredith Kramon), following 11 school-records during the indoor season. John Temidara (Santa Fe Springs) continues to lead the nation in the triple jump and could be an early favorite for Big West Athlete of the Year on the men's side, as he leads conference in the triple jump, is third in the high jump and fourth in the long jump. Temidara ranks 23rd nationally in the high jump as well, his signature event prior to this spring. Ronald Carter (Gardena) is nipping at Temidara's heals, ranking second in the conference and fourth nationally in the triple jump, and also ranking fourth in the Big West in the long jump. Carter has hit 51' in each of his two meets, while Temidara has reached at least 50' in his two triple jumps. The tandem of Kristina Price (Snelling) and Katelyn Ciarelli (Huntington Beach) continue to rank high in the throws, with Ciarelli ranking second (discus), fourth (javelin) and fifth (hammer) and Price ranking third (discus), fourth (shot) and sixth (hammer) in the conference rankings Kim Heinz (Florence, MT) continues to lead the Big West in the javelin, as her school-record throw of 159'9" ranks 20th nationally. Junior Jasmine Winfield (Oceanside) ranks in the top-five in the 100, 200 and 400-meter races, as she is a part of a sprints program which has the second-fastest 4x100 time and third-fastest 4x400 time in the Big West. David Sampson (shot), Jimmy Grabow (10,000m), Danielle Miller (steeple) and Robert Jennings (discus) lead the conference as well. |
