49ers Travel to Final Regular Season Meet
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State track and field will travel to its final full meet of the season when it participates in the two-day UC Irvine Steve Scott Invitational on April 28 and 29. The hammer throw will be on Friday at 1 p.m., with the rest of competition starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. With two weeks to go until the Big West Championships during the weekends of May 6-7 and May 12-13, the 49ers have a combined 90 Big West qualifying marks for 46 athletes and 14 NCAA regional marks for 11 athletes. The 49ers feature seven athletes who lead their conferences in their respective events, including newcomer Jill Reynolds, who last week posted the school's second-best pole vault all-time, at 12'5.5". "Athletes who have been strong in one area, have really helped us as a team, in becoming proficient at their secondary events," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "At this point I'm very happy with what we've accomplished, but I know it will mean very little, if we are not very successful at the championships." Chris Richardson alone has seven Big West qualifying marks and three regional qualifying marks, and is already slated to go to the NCAA Championships in Sacramento with a score of 7605 in the decathlon. Richardson ranks fifth nationally in the decathlon, and 15th in the long jump, and has also qualified for the NCAA Regional in the javelin. So far this season the 49ers have gar ned nine Big West Conference Athlete of the Week honors, a record for LBSU and the four-year old award. LBSU has garnered the last four field athletes of the week on the men's side, and received three of the four total awards this week. John Temidara continues to impress during his senior season, ranking in the national top-25 in the triple jump (16th) and high jump (22nd). Senior Ronald Carter ranks 18th nationally in the triple jump, as the former walk-on tries to return to the NCAA Championships as just a 20-year old and soon-to-be graduate in marketing. |
