Richardson on Cusp of NCAA's at Mt. SAC

Richardson Sets Record, Qualifies for NCAA's AZUSA, CA-- Chris Richardson (Downey) became the first Long Beach State track and field athlete to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships in the decathlon, breaking the school-record in the event with 7605 points. The total not only qualifies the junior for the collegiate championships, but also the USATF Senior Championship. Both events are in June. Richardson snapped Shawn Wilbourn's 16-year old record in the event (7148) near midnight on Thursday, finishing in fourth place. Thursday he ran a time of 15.09 in the 100-meter hurdles and threw the discus 149'5", and the javelin a personal-best 204'3". On Wednesday, Richardson set five personal-best's, finishing with 4052 points after the first five events. On Wednesday he posted best's in the 100m (11.20), long jump (24'3.75"), shot put (47'9.25"), high jump (6'6") and 400m (50.90). Jaime Cuthbert-Allen finished 13th in the heptathlon with the third-most points in school-history, scoring 4930 points. Cuthbert-Allen set personal-best's in the 100-meter hurdles (14.97), shot put (35'5") and long jump (18'6"). She fell just 70 points of a regional qualifying mark. The distances were also running at Mt. SAC with Ludi Valdez falling just two seconds of her personal-best from two weeks ago. The mark was the second-fastest in school-history, as just one 49er, Jennifer Bessel (16:16.82) in 1990 has run faster. Mario Cobian running a season-best in the 800m (1:52.43) for fifth place and Jaclyn Pedersen running 4:33.00 in the 1500-meter for third. |
