49ers Fall In Four At UC Irvine Anteaters Hit .414 In Victory

IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State won game one against No. 1-ranked UC Irvine on Saturday night at Crawford Court, but UCI was able to bounce back and come away with a 28-30, 30-21, 34-32, 30-26 victory. The sixth-ranked 49ers fall to 17-9 overall and 10-8 in the MPSF while UCI, which won its 17th consecutive match, improved to 23-3 and 16-2 in league action.
UCI was led by a trio of players. Matt Webber tallied 19 kills and hit .424 (19-5-33) while Jayson Jablonsky had 14 kills and Aaron Harrell 11. Harrell also hit .611 (11-0-18) and added six blocks. David Smith had just seven kills, but recorded a career-best 13 blocks. UCI was able to out-block the 49ers 21.5 to 10.0 as Paul Spittle added eight block assists and setter Brian Thornton added six.
Long Beach was led by Duncan Budinger's 18 kills, Robert Tarr chipped in with 16 and Paul Lotman 13, but the 49ers hit just .150 (69-46-153) on the evening. No starter, besides setter Tyler Hildebrand, hit better than .263. Long Beach committed a total of 67 errors in the match (46 hitting, one setting, 15 serving, three blocking, two receiving) which represented 67 of UCI's 122 total points. Tarr also added a career-best five service aces and picked up his fourth double-double of the year with 10 digs, complimenting his 16 kills.
Hildebrand finished the night with 53 assists and a career-high tying six kills. He is just two assists short of breaking the school assist mark. Currently with 6,323 assists, with just two more in his next match he will pass Jason Stimpfig's (1990-93) 6,324 career assists.
The 49ers won game one 30-28 despite hitting just .140 (19-13-43). Lotman recorded five kills in the effort. Game two was all UCI as the 49ers hit just .077 (16-13-39). UCI had only 11 kills in the game and Smith had five block assists.
Game three was the pivotal one in the match. Trailing 17-15, the 49ers went on a 7-0 run highlighted by the serving of Tarr. Tarr served three aces in the run and lifted the 49ers to a 22-17 lead. UCI fought back though, eventually tying the game at 26-26. From there it was a see-saw affair. Down 29-28, the 49ers would fall behind by one point but Hildebrand would go to Budinger and he put the ball away four straight times to keep the 49ers in the game. The final tie came at 32-32. UCI finally won the game on its fifth game point on a hitting error by the 49ers.
Game four saw the 49ers up 19-18 before UCI went on a 6-2 run to take a 24-21 advantage. The Anteaters closed it out from there, winning 30-26 and capturing the match three games to one.
The 49ers will next be in action on Thursday, April 6 when they host Brigham Young at 7:30 pm in the Walter Pyramid. |
