49ers Fall To CS Northridge In Five Budinger Ties Career-High With 28 Kills March 24, 2006

LONG BEACH, CA-- Dan Rhodes tallied 21 kills and Brian Waite 18 as Cal State Northridge came back from a two games to none deficit to defeat Long Beach State 23-30, 20-30, 30-24, 34-32, 15-12 on Friday evening in a MPSF contest at the Walter Pyramid. CSUN, which won its fourth match in a row on the road, improved to 15-8 overall and 10-7 in the MPSF. The 49ers fall to 17-7 and 10-6 in league play. CSUN won the previous league meeting on March 3 in Northridge also in five games.
Duncan Budinger tied his career-high with 28 kills on the evening and hit .357. Robert Tarr added 21 kills, eight digs and four blocks and hit .317. They were the only 49ers in double digits. Long Beach hit .302 in the match, but just .133 (6-4-15) in game number five.
Rhodes was impressive hitting .341 to go along with his 21 kills while Waite hit .556 (18-3-27). Fifteen of Waite's 18 kills came in the final three games. Cary Hanson came off the bench to finish with 12 kills in 17 swings while adding 11 digs and five blocks. CSUN hit .338 for the match.
In game five the Matadors were able to take control late in the game. Tied 10-10, CSUN jumped ahead on a service error by Tarr. Then back-to-back hitting errors by Budinger and Kevin Cape gave the Matadors a 13-10 advantage. From there they closed it out as Waite finished the match with a kill.
Long Beach was dominate in games one and two recording a .364 (31-11-55) hitting percentage. In game one the 49ers hit .522 (16-4-23) as Budinger had seven kills and Tarr five. The 49ers also had six service aces, two by Teddy Liles. In game two CSUN helped the 49ers out by committing a total of 14 errors (9 hitting, 4 service errors, 1 BHE). The Matadors hit just .059 (11-9-34) in the game.
Game three saw a turnaround for CSUN as Hanson, Waite and Rhodes took over. Rhodes had six kills in game three as CSUN hit .361 (19-6-36) en route to a 30-24 victory. In game four the Matadors almost blew a 27-23 lead as the 49ers came back to the the game at 28-28 on a Rhodes hitting error. Four ties later CSUN was able to put the final two points on the board in a 34-32 victory. Waite had seven kills in game four and Hanson recorded six kills in game three and game four.
CS Northridge was able to use outstanding defense as well. The Matadors out-dug Long Beach 43-to-41 as Hanson and libero Sebastian Pedraza both had 11 digs. Rhodes and setter Travis Bluemling both added six. Bluemling finished with 66 assists on the night. Paul Lotman and Tyler Caldwell led the Beach with nine digs apiece. 49er setter Tyler Hildebrand finished with 57 assists, five digs and three kills.
The 49ers will next be in action on Friday, March 31 when they play at UCLA at 7 pm.
