LONG BEACH, CA-- Senior Duncan Budinger tied his career-high with 28 kills while hitting .590 as Long Beach State rolled to a 30-16, 30-26, 30-27 win over No. 11-ranked Ohio State on Saturday evening in the Active Ankle Classic. Budinger was named the tournament MVP for the victorious 49ers (17-6). OSU fell to 15-6 with the loss.
Long Beach hit an impressive .485 (59-12-97) in the match, including a .692 in game number one. Budinger hit .590 (28-5-39) while Robert Tarr hit .520 (14-1-25) with 14 kills. All-American setter Tyler Hildebrand, who moved into the No. 2 spot all-time in career assists this weekend, finished with 52 assists, three digs and a team-high four blocks. Paul Lotman added eight kills and a team-high nine digs.
Sam Stevens led Ohio State with 10 kills and seven digs while hitting .474 (10-1-19), Brett Versen added nine kills and Ben Spurlock had seven kills and hit a perfect 1.000 for the match. OSU hit .284 as a team and out-blocked the 49ers 9.0 to 5.5. John Albertson led the way with six blocks to go along with his seven kills.
The 49ers got things off on the right foot winning game one easily 30-16. LBSU hit .692 (18-0-26) while OSU hit just .061 (11-9-33). Budinger had eight kills in nine attempts and Tarr added six kills. In game two, Tarr took over with seven kills and the 49ers hit a strong .459 (22-5-37) to win 30-26. Spurlock had five of his seven kills in game number two.
Game three saw OSU grab a 20-15 lead. The 49ers went on a 5-1 run to pull to within 21-20, but the Buckeyes extended the margin to 24-22. Long Beach then went on a 3-0 run to take a 25-24 lead and then were able to close it out from there, winning 30-27. Hildebrand had a solo block on OSU's Stuart Katz which gave the 49ers a 27-25 lead.
In the opening match of the evening, No. 2-ranked BYU (16-4) got 12 kills apiece from Yosleyder Cala and Jonathan Charette to defeat Rutgers-Newark 30-15, 30-21, 30-24. BYU hit .351 for the match and limited the Scarlet Raiders (7-12) to a .060 (27-22-83) hitting percentage. Cala hit .556 (12-2-18) and Russell Holmes hit .625 (6-1-8) with six kills in eight attempts. The Cougars recorded nine service aces, four by Cala, and out-dug Rutgers 30-24. Taylor Evans led the Cougars with six digs. For Rutgers-Newark, Andrew Pink led the way with seven kills and 11 digs while Danny McGowan, Brian Honsberger and Eric Honsberger all had six kills.
The 49ers will next be in action on Friday, March 24 when they host Cal State Northridge at 7:30 pm in the Walter Pyramid.
