LONG BEACH, CA-- Four players tallied double figures in kills as No. 5-ranked Long Beach State (16-6) defeated Rutgers-Newark 30-20, 27-30, 30-21, 30-22 on Friday night in the opening round of the Active Ankle Classic in the Walter Pyramid. Rutgers fell to 7-11 with the loss.
Duncan Budinger led the way with 14 kills, Francisco Valdez added 13 and Teddy Liles and Robert Tarr each had 12 as the 49ers hit .356 for the evening. Tarr added 10 digs for a double-double. Setter Tyler Hildebrand had 54 assists, three kills, five digs and two aces and ran the 49er attack. Paul Lotman added eight kills and Kevin Cape seven.
Long Beach out-dug the Scarlet Raiders 33-26 as Tarr had 10 and Hildebrand five. The 49ers were out-blocked though 9.0 to 8.0. Budinger led Long Beach with five blocks and Cape added four. Long Beach received nine service aces, three by Tarr, but also committed 20 service errors.
Eric Honsberger led Rutgers-Newark with 16 kills and hit .333. His brother Brian, finished with 10 kills and four blocks. Rutgers hit just .173 on the evening. In game two the Scarlet Raiders hit .429 (17-5-28) as they won 30-27, but in the other three games they hit no higher than .120.
Long Beach opened the match in fine fashion winning game on 30-20 and hitting .419 (18-5-31). The Beach had four aces in the first game, but faltered in game two as they recorded six service errors.
In the opening match of the night, No. 2 Brigham Young lost the first game but came back to defeat Ohio State 27-30, 30-24, 30-21, 32-30. The Cougars (15-4) were led by Ivan Perez's 18 kills and 10 digs. Rodrigo Gomes added 13 kills as the Cougars hit .266 and out-dug the Buckeyes 39 to 23. Taylor Evans also added 10 digs for BYU. John Albertson led the Buckeyes with 13 kills and eight blocks and Stuart Katz added 11 kills. OSU (15-5) hit .300 for the match but had 20 service errors on the evening.
The tournament continues on Saturday as BYU takes on Rutgers-Newark at 5:30 pm and Long Beach State takes on Ohio State at 7:30 pm.
