49ers Fall At Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, PA-- Penn State hit .398 for the evening and upset No. 3-ranked Long Beach State 30-22, 21-30, 30-20, 30-27 on Saturday night at the Penn State Invitational. Long Beach falls to 10-2 on the year while the Nittany Lions, ranked No. 12, improved to 4-4.

Matt Proper led PSU with 21 kills and Nate Meerstein added 14 as the Nittany Lions used a big advantage at the net to win the match. Penn State out-blocked the 49ers 18.5 to 10.0 as Matt Holt and Matt Anderson both had nine block assists. Kevin Wentzel added 11 kills for PSU.

Robert Tarr led Long Beach State with 25 kills while Duncan Budinger added 10 kills and five blocks. Paul Lotman and Teddy Liles both had seven kills. Long Beach hit just .237 for the match and after tying the match at one game apiece after winning game two 30-21, the 49ers fell apart in game three hitting just .077 (14-11-39).

The 49ers will next be in action on Friday, February 10 when they host UC San Diego at 7:30 pm in the Walter Pyramid.
