LONG BEACH, CA--Robert Tarr had 12 kills and Duncan Budinger and Francisco Valdez each added 11 as the No. 4-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team rolled to a 30-25, 30-21, 30-27 win over UC San Diego on Friday evening at the Walter Pyramid. Long Beach improves to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in the MPSF while UCSD falls to 1-9 and 0-7 in league action.
Long Beach hit .330 (48-18-91) on the evening as Budinger hit .421 and Tarr .333. All-American setter Tyler Hildebrand dished out 40 assists and added three kills and three digs to the cause. The 49ers had seven aces on the evening as Tarr and Paul Lotman both had three. In the back row Tyler Caldwell led all players with 10 digs.
Chris Sayers led UCSD with 10 kills and Mike Reuter added nine while hitting .412. The Tritons hit .294 for the match, including a solid .345 (15-5-29) in game number three. Setter Brooks Dierdorff had 37 assists and six digs. The Tritons hurt themselves with 18 service errors on the evening.
In game one the 49ers led 26-23 before pulling away and recording a 30-25 win. The 49ers hit .367 (17-6-30) in the game as Tarr and Valdez both had five kills. Game three was the tightest of the evening as one team would make a mini-run, only to see it answered by the other team. Long Beach led 27-24 before UCSD tied the match at 27-27. The 49ers were able to sideout on a kill by Tarr and then closed out the match with consecutive kills by Lotman and Teddy Liles.
Long Beach will next be in action on Thursday, February 16 when they play at Hawaii.
