LBSU Falls in Three to UH

49ers Fall to Hawaii, 3-0
HONOLULU, HI -- The No. 4-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Hawaii on Thursday night from the Stan Sheriff Center. Game scores were 30-21, 30-25, 30-22 in favor of UH. The 49ers fell to 11-3, 6-2 MPSF, while the Warriors improved to 6-4, 4-3 MPSF. Robert Tarr led Long Beach State with 16 kills, however the 49ers hit just .193 for the match (43-22-109). LBSU was also out-blocked 13.5-2.0. Jose Delgado, Lauri Hakala, and Matt Carere all registered 13 kills each for Hawaii. UH hit .484 for the match. Long Beach State held an 11-9 lead after a Duncan Budinger kill in the first game, before Hawaii went on an 8-3 run to take a 17-14 lead, courtesy of a 49er hitting error. Hawaii cruised the rest of the way en route to the 30-21 win. Game two saw UH jump out to a 3-1 lead and extended it to 15-10 at the media timeout. Hawaii would go up by as many as seven points at 23-16 when LBSU mounted a mini comeback. The 49ers closed the gap to 29-25, before Francisco Valdez's attack error gave UH a 30-25 for the 2-0 match lead. Long Beach came out strong in the third stanza and took a 10-8 advantage on a kill by Budinger. The Warriors reclaimed the lead for good at 11-10 after a LBSU attack error, a Hakala ace, and a Hakala kill. UH ended up scoring five of the next six points in the stretch to lead 13-11. Both teams traded points with UH leading 19-18, before the Warriors went on a 11-4 run to close out the match, 30-22. Long Beach State looks to even the series tomorrow, Friday, at 9 pm. |
