Hawaii Halts LBSU in Four
HONOLULU, HI -- Despite 22 kills each from Robert Tarr and Duncan Budinger, the No. 4-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at Hawaii on Friday night from the Stan Sheriff Center. Long Beach State fell to 11-4, 6-3 MPSF, while Hawaii improved to 7-4, 5-3 MPSF. It was a back and forth battle in the first stanza, as UH held a slim 21-20 advantage before running off four of the next five points to build a comfortable margin, en route to the 30-25 win. Both teams again went back and forth in Game two until LBSU took the lead for good at 22-21. Hawaii stayed close and trailed 25-24 before the 49ers picked up two quick points on a kill by Robert Tarr and a UH hitting error, which gave the 49ers a three-point lead and the eventual 30-27 win. Hawaii opened game three with a 5-1 lead and increased it to a five-point margin at 16-11. LBSU quickly responded and pulled to within three at 20-17. But it was the backup setter Sean Carney who sparked a UH run from the service line with a 5-0 run to give the Warriors a a 2-1 match lead, and the 30-23 win. Game four was more of the same -- a back and forth battle in the early going. UH again came out strong leading 5-1 and held the lead, until LBSU final took over the lead at 28-27 on a double-block by Tarr and Teddy Liles. UH fought off three match points, the last being 32-31. But a Matt Carere kill, a LBSU hitting error by Kevin Cape, and another kill by Carere gave the Warrior the two-match sweep. Hawaii hit .333 compared to LBSU's .242. UH Setter Brian Beckwith dished out 64 assists, while Lauri Hakala added 18 kills and Carere 16.
