Irvine Tops LBSU, 3-1 Tarr Records 17 Kills

LONG BEACH, CA – The No. 2-ranked UC Irvine men's volleyball team rallied to defeat No. 6-ranked Long Beach State, 3-1 from The Walter Pyramid on Friday night. Game scores were 26-30, 30-27, 32-30, 30-26 in favor of UCI.
Long Beach State fell to 11-5, 6-4 MPSF, while UC Irvine improved to 13-3, 8-2 MPSF.
Robert Tarr led LBSU with 17 kills, while Kevin Cape and Duncan Budinger both notched 14 kills each. Teddy Lies checked in with 13 kills. Tyler Caldwell posted a team-high 12 digs. Tyler Hildebrand had 60 assists. LBSU managed just a .285 hitting percentage (68-25-151), and were out-blocked, 10.5-7.5.
Jayson Jablonsky led UCI with a match-high 19 kills. Matt Webber added 16 kills for the Anteaters, who hit .395 for the match (67-16-129).
Long Beach State took control of the first game when it unlocked a 15-15 tie with a 5-1 run to take a 20-16 lead courtesy of a Tarr kill. The 49ers maintained their four-point cushion the rest of the way and closed out the set, 30-26 after a Budinger kill.
UCI responded to tie the match in the second frame with a 30-27 game two win. The Anteaters held leads of 20-15 and 22-18, before LBSU cut the deficit to 26-25 after a Liles kill. UC Irvine did not fold and scored the next two points to take a 28-25 lead after a David Smith kill. UCI ended the game on a 49er attack error.
The 49ers rallied from an 18-12 deficit to have a chance at three match points (29-27, 29-28, and 30-29), before falling 32-30 in the third game. Two errors and an ace help lift UCI to the 2-1 match lead.
The Anteaters fought off a late game rally by The Beach in the fourth game for the 30-26 win.
LBSU takes on UCLA tomorrow night at 7 pm from The Walter Pyramid.
