49ers Rally To Beat IPFW Robert Tarr Leads Way With 28 Kills

STATE COLLEGE, PA-- The No. 3-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team rallied from a two-game deficit to come away with a 23-30, 27-30, 30-26, 30-17, 15-8 win over Indiana-Purdue, Fort Wayne (IPFW) on Friday night in the opening match of the Penn State Invitational. The 49ers improve to 11-1 with the win while IPFW falls to 2-5.
The Mastadons won the first two games 30-23, and 30-27 with blistering hitting. IPFW hit .515 (22-5-33) in game number one compared to just .250 for The Beach. In game two IPFW hit .379 while the 49ers managed just a .226 percentage. But in game three the 49ers were able to get things going. LBSU hit .389 (19-5-36) to work its way back into the match.
Senior Robert Tarr led the way with 28 kills, while adding seven digs and two aces. Sophomore Norm Hutton, playing in his second match of the year, had a career-high 17 kills while hitting .583 (17-3-24). Hutton's previous career-best was a 13-kill effort last season at UC San Diego. Senior Duncan Budinger was the third 49er in double digits with 10 kills, hitting .556 (10-0-18). C.J. Macias led IPFW with 27 kills.
The 49ers ended up hitting a respectable .373 in the match after the slow start. LBSU hit .389 in game three, .625 in game four and .467 (9-2-15) in game five, a 15-8 triumph. IPFW hit .291 for the match.
Setter Tyler Hildebrand dished out 63 assists and added five digs. The 49ers out-dug IPFW 38 to 24 as Paul Lotman had a team-high eight digs and Tarr added seven. Freshman Gavin Christensen played in two games, recording his first kill as a 49er and adding a career-best five digs.
The 49ers continue play at the Penn State Invitational on Saturday when they take on the host Nittany Lions of Penn State. |
