49ers Sweep Past UCSB Robert Tarr Leads Way With 19 Kills

LONG BEACH, CA-- The No. 3-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team rolled to a 30-26, 30-25, 30-24 win over UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday night at the Walter Pyramid. Robert Tarr led the 49ers (9-1, 5-1 MPSF) with 19 kills. Bryan Berman led the Gauchos (4-6, 3-4 MPSF) with 13 kills.
The 49ers hit .300 for the evening, including an impressive .400 (15-3-30) in game number two. Long Beach out-blocked UCSB 14.0 to 4.0 and limited the Gauchos to a .101 team hitting percentage. Senior Teddy Liles led the 49ers with seven blocks and Duncan Budinger added six. Sophomore Paul Lotman recorded 11 kills, three digs and four block assists.
Long Beach broke open a tight game one with a 4-0 run which erased an 18-15 deficit and gave LBSU a 19-18 lead. The 49ers never looked back from there. Tarr had nine kills in game number one alone and Liles added four block assists. In game two the 49ers slowly pulled away after an early 13-13 tie. UCSB had 11 hitting errors in the game and the 49ers hit .400. Game three was tight throughout. Leading 26-24 the 49ers got back-to-back kills from Lotman and then back-to-back hitting errors by the Gauchos to close out the victory.
Derek Otte added six kills and two aces for the Gauchos, but hit -.100. Michael Fisher added seven kills and seven digs.
All-American setter Tyler Hildebrand had 38 assists, six digs and four block assists and Liles and Budinger both had seven kills.
The 49ers hit the road this weekend as they compete at the Penn State Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Friday at 2 pm Pacific, they tangle with IPFW. Saturday at 5 pm they take on the host Nittany Lions of Penn State. |
