UNLV Controls 2nd Half, Wins at LBSU
LONG BEACH, CA – The UNLV women's basketball team practically led from start to finish and left the Walter Pyramid with a 61-44 victory over Long Beach State on Saturday night. LBSU fell to 1-8 on the season, while the Rebels improved to 3-4. Karina Figueroa led The Beach with a season-high16 points, while Kaiti O'Brien chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds. Lauren Sims contributed nine points and two assists. Sequoia Holmes posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead UNLV. The 49ers seemed to carry their momentum from late in the first half to the second when they took a one point lead, 33-32, after a Madison Pagani layup. The Rebels quickly erased the slim deficit and eventually built an 11 point lead, 51-40 after a Holmes jumper. UNLV jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after a Sequoia Holmes layup, before a Sims three-pointer ended the Rebel scoring run. UNLV pushed its lead to eight, 25-17, after a Pace three-pointer at the 5:41 mark. After the Rebels held an eight point lead (32-24) with 3:28 left in the period, the 49ers began to chip away at the Rebel lead behind a tough defense and seven consecutive points (a jumper and a pair of free throws by Figueroa, and a three-pointer by Sims). UNLV did not convert a field goal in that span, but did hold a 32-31 halftime lead. The 49ers travel to Arizona on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 7 pm. LBSU has not been in Tucson since 1992. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
