Sims Lifts LB to Overtime Win LONG BEACH, CA – A second half rally and a last second three-pointer in regulation lifted the Long Beach State women's basketball team to an eventual 66-63 overtime win over Love and Basketball in its final exhibition tune-up on Friday night in the Walter Pyramid. Lauren Sims scored a team-high 16 points to lead Long Beach State, while Tyresha Calhoun and Courtney Jacob both chipped in with 12 points each. Madison Pagani registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Lindsey Beckner also grabbed 10 rebounds for LBSU. Tanisha Johnson led Love and Basketball with a game-high 25 points. Down by as many as12 points (28-40) in the second half, Long Beach State slowly chipped away at the Love and Basketball lead and took a one-point advantage (44-43) after a Sims three-pointer with 8:45 left in the game. Both teams traded leads, before Love and Basketball led by three, 56-53, with 39 seconds left in regulation. After Sims missed her first three-point attempt with seconds remaining, Beckner managed to rebound the ball in traffic and kick it back to Sims who sunk the desperation three-pointer as time expired. The 49ers erased a two-point deficit in overtime and converted six free throws to secure the three-point victory. Love and Basketball jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before the 49ers recovered and took a 6-5 lead after a pair of Beckner free throws. The visitors led by as many as six points, 17-11, after a Johnson layup at the 11:12 mark in the period. Love and Basketball held its biggest lead at seven, 26-19, after consecutive Natalie Nakase free throws, and took a three-point lead into the locker room at halftime. LBSU managed to pull within two points of the visitors' lead at 26-24 after a Sims three-pointer at the 2:47 mark. Johnson accumulated for more than half of Love and Basketball's total first half output with 16 points. Calhoun had seven points for The Beach at the break. Long Beach State opens its 2006-07 season at No. 22-ranked USC on Friday, November 10 at 7 pm in the Galen Center.
