49ers Fall to Team Concept

49ers Drop Exhibition Opener LONG BEACH, CA – The Long Beach State women's basketball team opened its 2006-07 exhibition schedule with 69-59 loss to Team Concept on Wednesday night in the Walter Pyramid. Freshman Lauren Sims had a team-high 14 points in the losing effort, while sophomore Karina Figueroa chipped in with 12 points. Sophomore Kaiti O'Brien grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as well. Chrystal Starling led Team Concept with a game-high 17 points. Turnovers plagued Long Beach State, as the 49ers committed 35. LB shot 40 percent from the field (23-of-57) and 7-of-21 from three-point range. The 49ers grabbed the early momentum in the second half and owned a 35-31 lead before Team Concept went on a 14-2 run to go up 45-37 at the 14:31 mark. Team Concept never relinquished its lead the rest of the way and left the Walter Pyramid with the 10-point victory. Long Beach State jumped out to an early 6-0 lead thanks to two Sims baskets and an O'Brien jumper in the lane, before Team Concept answered with a 10-3 run to take a 10-9 lead at the 13:20 mark. The 49ers rallied to take a two-point lead at 18-16 after a Lauren Bagley jumper, and increased their lead to 23-20 after a Sims three-pointer with 6:04 left in the half. Team Concept then built a four-point lead, 31-27 after a Starling layup, before O'Brien's layup with 1:04 left in the period brought the halftime score to 31-29 with the visitors on top. The 49ers complete their exhibition schedule next Tuesday vs. Love and Basketball at 7 pm in the Walter Pyramid. |
