49ers Upset in UC Davis, 2-1 in First Overtime
DAVIS, CA-- Despite outshooting UC Davis (8-4-1) 14-to-7 in the match, BritneeWarmerdam scored in the 97th minute to give the Aggies an upset of visiting No. 20-ranked Long Beach State (12-3-1) 2-1 in the first overtime. UCD nearly pulled off the upset in regulation as Liz Ramos' kick save and smother, on a shot from Annie McAllister with 41 seconds left kept it tied at 1-1. Kim Silos nearly gave the 49ers the lead in the 75th minute as a pass from Rachel Whiteaker near midfield went ahead to Silos, who missed wide right from 10 yards out. LBSU outshot the Aggies 13-to-5 over the first 90 minutes. UC Davis tied the match at 1-1 in the 50th minute, taking just their second shot of the contest, as Jordan Martin scored from eight yards out on a slider that found the bottom left corner. It was the first goal given up by the 49er defense in four matches. The 49ers routinely beat UCD's defense in the first half, producing a half dozen runs in which they broke away and went nearly uncontested towards keeper. One of those runs led to the first goal of the contest, as Sara Baca passed it from midfield into an open field, and after beating a defender, Silos went the final 35 yards for the score at 16:39 to give LBSU a 1-0 lead. UC Davis officially joins the Big West in 2007-08. The 49ers took eight shots in the first half, totally shutting down the Aggies' offense, as UCD's lone shot was a field-goal type tally off a foul late in the first half. The 49ers return home on Sunday to host UC Irvine as they return to Big West play as the frontrunners in the conference opening play this weekend. |
