LA JOLLA, CA—Senior Duncan Budinger (Encinitas, CA) had a great homecoming on Wednesday night recording 13 kills and seven blocks to lead No. 1-ranked Long Beach State to a 30-24, 30-21, 30-21 win at UC San Diego (0-1/0-1 MPSF). Budinger hit an impressive .812 (13-0-16) in the match as he did not commit a hitting error. Long Beach improves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).
Long Beach hit .353 (45-15-85) on the evening and out-blocked the Tritons 16.0 to 4.5. Setter Tyler Hildebrand recorded seven blocks to go along with four kills and 35 assists, and Paul Lotman and Teddy Liles both recorded four blocks. Lotman and Liles both added seven kills while senior Robert Tarr finished with eight kills and four digs. Libero Tyler Caldwell led the 49ers with nine digs.
Chris Sayers led UCSD with 13 kills, but hit just .094 (13-10-32). Tim Dietrich added six kills. The Tritons gave up too many easy points to the 49ers, thanks to numerous errors. UCSD committed a total of 44 errors in the match, which in turn led to 44 points for LBSU. UCSD had 28 hitting errors, 11 service errors, one blocking error and four reception errors. The Tritons hit just .120 (40-28-100) in the match.
With his seven blocks, Budinger now has 299 in his 49er career, a mark which ranks No. 14 all-time at LBSU. Right ahead of him holding on to the No. 13 spot with 300 career blocks is current head coach Alan Knipe. Budinger also recorded his 800th career kill.
The 49ers will be home on Saturday, January 14 when they host Cal Baptist at 7 pm at the Walter Pyramid. |
