Romo Scores Game-Winner in 71st Minute
LONG BEACH, CA-- Junior Elizabeth Romo (Whittier) scored the game-winner in the 71st minute, as Long Beach State (3-1-0) posted a 1-0 shutout over visting Weber State (1-3-0). It is the first time in school-history the 49ers have posted three consecutive winning shutouts and it also continues a streak of seven consecutive 49er Classic matches in which LBSU has not allowed a goal, dating back to 2003. The 49ers, who unloaded in the second half with 11 shots and 17 for the contest, finally broke through at 70:37, when freshman Kim Silos (Ontario) drove up the left side, passed it ahead to fellow newcomer Hayley Bolt (Lakewood/Los Alamitos HS) who sent it to her right, and an awaiting Romo. Romo fired it from about 10 yards out to make it 1-0. LBSU goalie Liz Ramos (Bakersfield) made five saves on the day, including, what is becoming routine for the freshman, a point blank save off a laser from Rochelle Hoover in the 47th minute. Bolt had a chance to add to the lead in the 74th minute, but a low header was saved by goalie Kandice Golar, one of seven saves by the WSU goalie. Golar also stopped a potential goal just before halftime, as a pass from Silos to Romo in the 43rd minute was smothered by Golar. The 49er Classic continues on Saturday with WSU and Hawaii at 11 a.m., and the 49ers and the Wahine on Monday at 5 p.m. |
