Bolt Scores Game-Winner, Injured Later
STOCKTON, CA-- Freshman Hayley Bolt (Lakewood) scored the eventual game-winner in the 33rd minute and but was forced to leave the game in the 58th minute as Long Beach State (8-2-1, 1-0-0 Big West) held on to win their conference opener 1-0 on Friday evening over host Pacific (6-4-1, 0-1-0 Big West). The wrist injury nearly negated a strong conference opener for the 49ers, as LBSU was in control for most of the match, and was forced to hold serve over the final 32 minutes following the injury. Bolt's injury is day-to-day after falling in the 58th minute following a 49er possession deep in their end. LBSU ended the contest outshooting Pacific 10-to-8, with most of the Tigers' seven second half shots coming over the final 30 minutes of play, as LBSU was forced to shuffle its lineup. Pacific had an opportunity to tie it in the 78th minute, but following a free kick, Carla Velluntini and Mandi Van Dorn both missed shots to keep the 49ers in the lead. The 49er defense allowed just one first half shot, as LBSU would take a 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes. The Beach had six first half shots. The Beach got on the board in the 33rd minute when Sahar Haghdan (Palmdale) broke down the Tiger defense racing up the right wing before crossing it to a wide open Bolt (Lakewood) 12 yards in front of the net to give LBSU a 1-0 lead. Katelyn Quaresma (Manteca), playing in front a decidedly home crowd, had broken down the Tiger defense on the previous play, setting up the go-ahead goal. The 49ers were on the attack from the early going, taking three shots in the 10th minute of play as Pacific goalie Jaime Souza tipped and then caught consecutive shots from Elizabeth Romo (Whittier) and Bolt. Romo then would fire over the net 30 seconds later. The 49ers travel to CS Northridge for a match on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. LBSU returns home next Friday when they host Cal Poly on Friday, October 7 to begin a four-match homestand. |
