USC Snaps 49ers' Eight-Match Unbeaten Streak
LOS ANGELES, CA-- Amy Rodriguez proved why she was the top recruit in the country as the freshman Woman of Troy scored the game-winner in the 30th minute, before assisting on the second goal in the 81st minute to give host USC (5-3-1) a 2-0 victory over visiting Long Beach State (7-2-1). The win snapped the 49ers eight-match unbeaten streak. The Beach did a good job of controling the pace in the first half, but USC was able to find a seam in the 31st minute when Amy Rodriguez scored off a cross from Nini Louks to give the Women of Troy a 1-0 lead. LBSU actually outshot Southern California 5-to-4 over the first 45 minutes. Rodriguez then crossed it in the 81st minute from the right side to Leah Gallegos to give USC a 2-0 advantage. USC would finally wear down a solid 49er backline, taking six second half shots and outshooting the 49ers 10-to-7 for the contest. The 49ers had a chance to take an early lead, but a Hayley Bolt (Lakewood) header was saved out by USC goalie Veronica Simonton off a pass from Tiffany Vaught (Ladera Ranch) in the 23rd minute. The Beach defense, which has posted six shutouts, did not allow a USC shot until the 27th minute. USC had been ranked prior to this week's games. The 49ers continue its three-match roadtrip and begin Big West play on Friday when they travel to Pacific for a contest at 7 p.m. LBSU continues conference play on Sunday at CS Northridge at 2:30 p.m. LBSU is picked to finish third in the Big West. |
