49ers Off to Best Start in School History
LAS VEGAS, NV-- Freshman Hayley Bolt (Lakewood/Los Alamitos HS) scored two goals and added an assist as Long Beach State (5-1-0) continued its best start in school history with a 3-0 shutout of Sam Houston State (0-6-0) on the first day of the Adidas UNLV Classic. Bolt fired off a single-game record 10 shots, as the 49er defense limited the Bearkats to just two shots, and none until the 57th minute of game, outshooting SHSU 31-to-2. It was the team's fourth shutout five games, all wins, which also set a single-season record for consecutive wins. The shots fell three tallies short of the single-game record. "It was just a matter of breaking through," said second-year Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia, whose team took 15 first half shots with just one score. "They played with nine players behind the ball, which makes it difficult. But we stayed patient and did a good job of putting them away." Bolt got on the board in the 40th minute, settling a pass from Dana Farquhar (Redlands) from midfield, tapping it off her thigh, before one-timing it from 20 yards out to make it 1-0. Bolt scored again at 69:08, as the 49ers moved it around the box for a good minute, before Bolt finally connected from the right side to make it 2-0. Bolt than set up the final goal of the afternoon, crossing it to the leftside to Farquhar in the box, who passed it ahead to Nicole Cross (Cathedral City), who scored her first career goal in the 77th minute. The 49ers will play UNLV on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. before traveling to Fresno State on September 21. |
