Romo Scores Hat Trick for 49ers
LONG BEACH, CA-- Junior Elizabeth Romo (Whittier) scored just the second hat trick in Long Beach State history as the 49ers (1-1-0) rolled to a 4-0 victory over visiting San Jose State (0-3-0). Romo, who had five points all of last year, bettered that with six points on Tuesday in the home opener. Freshman Hayley Bolt (Lakewood/Los Alamitos HS) tallied a goal and an assist, as the 49ers started seven freshmen. LBSU outshot the Spartans 19-to-6 Bolt tallied the first goal of the season with a header at 4:41, taking a pass from prep teammate Julie Megorden (Los Alamitos/Los Alamitos HS) to give LBSU an early 1-0 lead. San Jose State actually had a chance to tie it int he 25th minute, two two missed headers off a corner kick kept it at a 1-0 advantage for the 49ers. It was then all Romo as she took a pass from Bolt in the 34th minute and hit a slow roller past two Spartan defenders to make it 2-0. Romo wasn't done in the first half as three minutes later she scored off a cross from freshman Dana Farquhar (Redlands) to make it 3-0. In the second half, Romo scored on a breakaway in the 75th minute to make it 4-0. The 49ers are next in action when they continue its four-game home stand with a game against Idaho State (0-2-0) on Friday at 5 p.m. |
