49ers Fall in Opener 3-0
WESTWOOD, CA-- With four freshmen in the starting lineup on opening day, Long Beach State (0-1-0) held serve with No. 3-ranked UCLA (1-0-0), but it was two perfectly placed balls in the first half, one near the end of the first 45 minutes, which proved to be the difference, as the Bruins won 3-0. UCLA struck early as Danesha Adams scored at 9:54 after taking passes from Jill Oakes and Christina DeMartino following one of nine corner kicks by UCLA, perfectly placing it into the back of the net. The 49ers then settled down after the first 15 minutes, and despite being outshot 9-to-1 in the first half and 20-to-2 for the game, started attack the Bruin defense. Hayley Bolt missed a header in the 41st minute which could of tied the game, as McCall Zerboni three minutes later benefitted from a batted around ball in the cage 26 seconds before halftime to make it 2-0. The 49ers had another shot to close to within one in the 58th minute after a UCLA foul at 25 yards out, but the Bruin line blocked a laser from Kim Silos. The 49ers open up four-game homestand beginning on Tuesday, August 30 when they host San Jose State at 5 p.m. |
