Young Named Athlete of the Week

Young Named Big West Field Athlete of the Week IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State's Samantha Young (Klamath Falls, OR) was named one of three Big West Conference Field Athletes of the Week after breaking her own school-record in the javelin at the Steve Scott Invitational. Young is in her first season at The Beach after spending two years at the University of Nevada, where she was an All-Western Athletic Conference selection. Young's toss of 158'10", broke her own mark of 158'1", and currently ranks second in the Big West. Young is one of four 49ers ranked in the top-five in the javelin, as she leads former BWC Athlete of the Week, Kim Heinz (158'7"), Lauren Reimer (138'8") and Sarah Faulkner (138'7"). Young is the third 49er this season to be honored with a weekly award, following Heinz on March 31 and sprinter Charlene Deardorff on April 7. Young earned the award with Cal Poly pole vaulter Kelly Dahl and CS Northridge jumper Toni Smith. |
