Eight Named All-Big West

Eight Named All-Big West FULL ALL-BIG WEST TEAM (PDF) IRVINE, CA-- As No. 12-ranked Long Beach State (36-20) prepared for the 2005 NCAA Regional at Blair Field, eight Dirtbags were named All-Big West Conference, highlighed by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (Sunnyvale), lefthander Cesar Ramos (Pico Rivera) and closer Neil Jamison (San Diego) on the first team. A trio of players made the second team in third baseman Evan Longoria (Downey), outfielder Sean Boatright (Mission Viejo) and righthander Jared Hughes (Laguna Beach). Righthanders Marco Estrada (San Fernando) and Brian Anderson (Aliso Viejo) were honorable mention selections. Tulowitzki, who finished the regular season with a team-best .355 average, is projected to be a top-five pick in next weekend's draft. Ramos, as the team's ace went 10-6 with a 2.27 ERA, and is also expected to go high in the draft. Ramos is a semifinalist for the Roger Clemens Award, given to the nation's top pitcher. Jamison, who has yet to allow an earned run in 25 appearances, was named a first team All-American by Sports Weekly last week and is a candidate for Stopper of the Year, given to the nation's top closer. Tulowitzki was a first team selection as a sophomore and a second teamer as a freshman. Ramos was named to the second team last season, while Jamison has twice been named to the second team. In all five pitchers were named all-conference as the Dirtbags lead the nation in ERA at 2.44. Hughes, who started just six games last year at Santa Clara, went 8-3 with a 2.83 ERA, while Estrada was 8-2 with a 2.27 ERA. Anderson, the team's setup man, had a 0.88 ERA over 26 appearances. This is the first all-conference award for the three. Longoria, a transfer from Rio Hondo JC, started 53 games at short and third while batting .316, while Boatright batted .311 as the team's centerfielder, which included a 27-game hit streak. The Beach will play fourth-seeded Rhode Island on Friday at 7 p.m., while USC and Pepperdine make up the other game at Blair Field. Games run through Saturday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. If necessary a game will be played on Monday in the double elimination tournament.
