Third Times the Charm for Hagos EUGENE, OR-- Long Beach State's Haben Hagos (Beverly Hills) proved that the third time was the charm at the NCAA Regional. The 49er senior finished tied for fourth in the high jump with a mark of 6'11" and is now headed to his first ever NCAA Championship. Hagos, who had cleared 6'9" and 6'11" on his first jumps on Friday, just missed vaulting into the top three, failing in three attempts at 7'1". USC's Jesse Williams won the meet with a height of 7'4.50". Hagos had not finished higher than eighth in his previous two attempts at a national berth in 2003 and 2004. Robert Jennings threw a personal-best 170'7" to finish in 15th place, the highest placing of four 49ers in the discus. Tyler McCoy was eighth in the javelin with a throw of 186'7". The women's 4x100-meter relay team will head to the finals on Saturday after finishing seventh with a time of 45.88. Hagos will join Jimmy Grabow, who has already qualified for the 10,000-meter, in Sacramento on June 8 for the national championships. The NCAA Regional continues through Saturday with a majority of the women's events and the relay teams set to compete. |
