49ers Ready for Big West Championships

49ers Head to Big West Championships LONG BEACH, CA -- The 49ers men and womens track team will begin its quest for a Big West Conference Championships at UC Irvine, beginning on Wednesday at noon with the two-day heptathlon and decathlon. The remainder of the meet starts on Friday at 12:00 p.m. Over two dozen 49ers are in a position earn all-conference honors. The sprints program has really taken off, especially on the women's side as Charlene Deardorff has the second fastest time in the 100-meter (11.73) and fourth best time in the 200-meter (24.45). Jasmine Winfield leads the Big West in the 400-meter (55.03).Both school-record running relay teams lead the conference in their respective events as the 4x100-meter (45.66) and the 4x400-meter (3:41.97), should both score points for The Beach. In throwing events, Serena Boykin has the third furthest shot put distance (49'05" ). In javelin, The Beach has four of the top five spots, as Samantha Young leads the way with the second longest throw with a school-record 158'10". On the men's side, sophomore Charles Lewis took take home three all-Big West awards as he is first in the 400-meter (47.49), fourth in the 200-meter (21.42), and fifth in the 100-meter (10.65). In distance, Kenny Lawrence has the fourth fastest time in the Steeple chase (9:10.10), while in the 10,000-meter, Jimmy Grabow ranks second (29:36.83). In throwing events, Ezra Kwong has the third furthest shot put distance (55'07"), while Tyler McCoy ranks second in the javelin (196'10"). The Beach finished fifth on both the men's and women's side in 2004. Looking ahead to the NCAA Regionals in Eugene, OR beginning on June 27, the 49ers already have 13 athletes with qualifying marks. The regional qualifiers on the women's side are: Charlene Deardorff in the 100-meter (11.73), Emily Forsythe for the high jump (5'9.75"), Serena Boykin in the shot put (51'3.75" ), Katelyn Ciarelli in the discus (158'8"), and in the javelin, Kim Heinz (158'7") and Samantha Young (158'10"). The regional qualifiers for the men are: Jimmy Grabow in the 10,000-meter (29:36.83) Dan Trautner (6'11.75") and Haben Hagos (6'10.75" ) in the high jump, Ezra Kwong (55'7") and David Sampson (55'02.25") in the shot put, Ed Cornell (169'5") and Robert Jennings (168'9") for the discus, and Steve Holland (193'4") and Robert Jennings (183'3") in the hammer. |
