Dirtbags Fall in 11 Innings, 4-3
IRVINE, CA-- Ollie Linton who tied the game with a squeeze bunt in the the 10th inning, fought through a nine-pitch at-bat to force a bases loaded walk to give UC Irvine (15-14, 2-3 Big West ) a 4-3 11th inning win over No. 13-ranked Long Beach State (23-11, 4-1 Big West). UC Irvine had loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th with two outs thanks to two singles and a hit by pitch by releiver Steve Hammond (0-3). All three of the runners on base prior to Linton's at-bat had reached base with two strikes. Both teams traded unearned runs in the 10th inning off the team's opposing closer, as Steve Velazco scored to give LBSU a 3-2 lead in the top of the inning on a passed ball by newly inserted catcher Aaron Lowenstein. Velazco had reached first with two outs after an error was charged to third baseman Matt Anderson, and had moved to third on a two-base failed pickoff by closer Blair Erickson. UCI then came right back to tie it at 3-3 against Neil Jamison, as a fielding error by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to lead off the bottom of the inning came around to score on a perfectly placed one-out bunt down the first base line by Ollie Linton. Pinch-runner TimWojcik had worked his way around the bases thanks to a groundout and a wild pitch. The Beach had a chance to break the 2-2 tie in the ninth, as Tulowitzki drove starter Justin Cassel from the game with a leadoff double. LBSU though was not able to get the go-ahead run home as following a sacrifice bunt, Chris Jones struck out and Danny Mocny grounded to third against Erickson. Cassel went 8.0 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, before Erickson gave up one unearned run over 2.0 innings of relief. UCI's Brett Dalton scored UCI's first two runs, each time leading off an inning with a base hit. Dalton's double in eighth inning ended up tying the game as a high throw by second baseman Chuck Sindlinger on a play at the plate on a fielder's choiced tied the game at 2-2. Anderson gave up one run over 2.0 innings of relief work. Marco Estrada, after handing it over to the the bullpen in the eighth, watched a 2-1 lead vanish after seven innings, after giving up one run on four hits. Estrada struck out five and walked one on the night. It was Estrada's third-straight no-decision. Two RBI doubles in the second inning gave The Beach an early 2-0 lead. Sean Boatright led off the second with a single and scored on a double from Chris Jones, before a one-out double from Jordan Struble doubled the score to 2-0. Boatright extended his hit streak to 11 with the hit. After Estrada retired 12 in a row, a leadoff single by Dalton ended up scoring on a two-out single from Matt Anderson to cut the Dirtbag lead to 2-1 in the sixth inning.
