49ers to Compete at Steve Scott Invitational Beach Feature Six Athletes with Top Marks in the Big West
April 27, 2005 LONG BEACH, CA -- The Long Beach State track and field teams will be at UC Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational this Saturday, with all events starting at 10:00a.m.
"The meet will be a good opportunity for our athletes to qualify for the NCAA Regionals," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "The UCI Invitational will also be a tune-up heading into the Big West Championships next month."
Tyler McCoy (javelin), Haben Hagos (triple jump), and Ronald Carter (triple jump) are three athletes closing in on regional qualifying marks, while in the relays, the women's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter teams are also near regional qualifying times.
The 49ers have six athletes and one relay team ranked in the top-two in the Big West Conference. On the women's side three athletes have the fastest times in the conference. In the sprints, Charlene Deardorff leads the 100-meter with a time of 11.73 and Jasmine Winfield ranks first in the 400-meter (55.03). In the relays, the 4x400-meter women's team ranks first with a time of 3:44.70.
In distance events, The Beach has two of the leading times in the 10,000-meter race. Meredith Kramon leads the conference with a time of 36:11.62 and Jimmy Grabow has the second fastest time on the men's side (29:36.83).
On the men's side, in the sprints Charles Lewis leads the 400-meter with a time of 47.49. Finally, Tyler McCoy has the second furthest distance in the javelin (196'10"). Long Beach has one more meet before the Big West Championships from May 11 to 14. |
