49ers Solid in Big West Challenge

Sprints Headline The Beach at Big West Challenge LONG BEACH, CA-- Charles Lewis and Charlene Deardorff led an exceptionally strong day for the 49ers at their own hosted Big West Challenge as Lewis was a part of three top finishes in the sprints, while Deardorff took home two titles. UC Irvine edged the 49ers in the men's side, 185-to-183, followed UC Santa Barbara (154) and CS Fullerton (120). On the women's side, UC Santa Barbara won (202), followed by The Beach (189), CS Fullerton (135) and UC Irvine (94). Lewis won the 100-meters with a time of 10.65, what is believed to be the fastest time since the mid-1990's, while he also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.45. Lewis was also on the winning 4x100-meter relay team and the 4x-400-meter second place relay squad. For Deardorff, she won the 100-meters with a Long Beach State-best of 11.73, while she also was a part of the 4x400-meter relay team which set a meet-record with a time of 3:46.38. Deardorff also finished second in the 200-meters (24.45) and was a part of the 4x100-meter relay team which was leading the whole race but was disqualified. "This meet always brings out the best performances, and I think we performed better than we have this season," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "I think it really opened a lot of our athletes eyes as to what they could accomplish, and that is what I'm excited about." Freshman Patrice White, primarily a 100 and 200-meter sprinter, stepped up in the 400-meter to finish second with a time of 56.01. Win also came for The Beach in the high jump thanks to Emily Forsythe (5'8.75"), long jump with Holly Lipscomb (18'2.25") and Kim Heinz in the javelin (152'7"). |
