All-Big West Team Named

All-Big West Teams Announced IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State women's basketball, the second seed in this week's Big West Tournament garnered a school-record five All-Big West selections, while the men's basketball, who will open up Big West play on Wednesday as the sixth seed, saw Jibril Hodges named honorable mention. For the women, who finished the regular season at 19-7 and in second place in the Big West, senior guard Aisha Hollans (Berkeley) was named to the first team, while junior center Petra Gläser (Amtsberg, Germany) and junior wing Crystal McCutcheon (Lancaster) were second team selections. Senior point guard Candice Wilson (Sacramento) was named honorable mention, while Jeannie Saunders (Long Beach/Wilson HS) was named to the All-Freshman Team. Hollans was named to the first team for the second time in her career, earning first team All-Pac 10 honors while at USC as a sophomore. Hollans led The Beach with 15.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. For Gläser, she was named to the second team for the second-straight year after averaging 12.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. McCutcheon earned her first all-league honors, ranking amongst Big West leaders in five different categories, including a conference-best 46 percent from three-point range. McCutcheon averaged 13.7 points per game during the regular season. For Wilson, she will end her career as a three-time all-conference selection, earning honorable mention honors the last two seasons after being named a second teamer as a sophomore. Wilson averaged 7.5 points and 4.4 assists per game this year. Saunders started seven of 27 games this year averaging 6.9 points per game. For the men, who won seven of their last eight to finish at 10-19, Hodges, the son of NBA sharp-shooter Craig Hodges, was named all-conference for the first time in his career. The junior averaged 12.8 points per game and shot 38 percent from three-point range. The men open up with eighth-seeded UC Santa Barbara at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while the women will await the winners of Wednesday's and Thursday's contests and play at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. |
