49ers Fall in Season Finale 64-60 SANTA BARBARA, CA-- Big West Champion UC Santa Barbara (19-8, 16-2 Big West) used a 14-4 run midway through the second half to hold on and defeat visiting Long Beach State (19-7, 13-4 Big West) 64-60 in the regular season finale. LBSU, which has lost two straight heading into next week's Big West Tournament, remain the No. 2 seed and will begin play next Friday in the semifinals. LBSU had a chance to pull even with under a minute left, but Mia Fisher would convert 3-of-4 free throws with 20 seconds left to seal the victory. A layup by Candice Wilson, who finished with a game-high 18 points, cut the lead to 61-58 with 1:21 left, while two free throws from Crystal McCutcheon cut the lead to 61-60 with 21 seconds left. McCutcheon had 17 points for the 49ers who shot 41 percent for the contest. UCSB led 47-36 with 13:36 remaining in the second half on a three-pointer by Erin O'Bryan prior to a 13 unanswered points by The Beach to give them a 49-47 lead with 10:51 left. Jeannie Saunders' three-pointer would give LBSU its last lead of the contest, prior to a 14-4 run by the Gauchos. O'Bryan finished with 18 points off the bench, while Kristen Mann had 14 points and nine rebounds. UCSB shot 38 percent for the game. Mann's free throw made it 61-53 with 3:42 left, before LBSU whittled the lead to one with under a minute left. |
