CSUN Runs Back on The Beach 66-63

49ers Watch CSUN Come Back and Win
LONG BEACH, CA--- Long Beach State (12-6, 7-3 Big West), who could have moved into a first place tie if that had held on, instead watched visiting CS Northridge (11-7, 6-4 Big West) go on an 18-7 run to get back in the game and win 66-63. The 49ers had a chance to win it with 10 seconds left, but two baseline layups by Petra Gläser were missed and Ofa Tulikihihifo converted two free throws with 7.7 seconds left to ice the game for the Matadors. Two free throws by Heather Cushing converted two free throws with 53 seconds to give CSUN a 63-62 lead after the 49ers led by 11 with eight minutes left. LaJoyce King had 22 points, while Tulikihihifo added 20 points. With Idaho's 56-52 win tonight over UC Santa Barbara, the duo move into a first place tie. Crystal McCutcheon had 20 points for the 49ers, while Petra Gläser added a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. LBSU shot 41 percent for the game, while CSUN hit for 46 percent. Tulikihihifo's layup with 2:53 left capped an 18-7 run by the Matadors and tied the score at 59-59, The Beach then answered with four straight points over the next minute and a half to lead 63-59 with 1:15. But a three-pointer by King, folllowed by the two free throws by Cushing ended the 49ers chances. After the Matadors closed to within four, LBSU went on an 8-1 run midway through the second half as a McCutcheon steal and layup made it 52-41 with 8:34 left. The 49ers went on a 20-9 run to end the half to lead 30-26. The Beach shot just 38 percent, compared to a 42 percent clip for CSUN. A jumper by Cassandra Markovich at 9:08 gave the Matadors their biggest lead of the half, at 17-10, before the 49ers went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to lead 18-17 and never trail again in the half. The Pyramid took a moment of silence prior to tip-off for long-time 49er scoreboard operator Al Fujimoto who passed away suddenly last Sunday. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. in Rancho Palo Verdes. www.longbeachstate.com has more details.
