Big Second Half Lifts Beach to Sixth Straight
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State (18-6, 12-3 Big West) doubled up the Aggies in the second half to erase an eight-point halftime deficit and ride into Saturday's home finale on Saturday with a six-game win streak, defeating visiting Utah State (14-11, 9-7 Big West) 75-59 on Thursday night. Aisha Hollans (Berkeley) led the 49ers with her 10th double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, while adding seven assists. Crystal McCutcheon (Lancaster) chipped in 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists as The Beach shot a blistering 60 percent in the second half and 44 percent for the game, outscoring USU 48-to-24 in the second half. Petra Gläser (Amtsberg, Germany) added 15 points. Utah State, after a 52 shooting percentage over the first 20 minutes, managed just a 31 percent clip in the second half. Taylor Richards scored a team-high 13 points, but just two in the second half, while Ali Aird added 10 points and nine rebounds. LBSU began its run after halftime, going on a 16-7 run to lead 44-42 on a Hollans jumper with 14:17 remaining. Another 14-4 run after that, capped by a Jayme Connors' jumper at 8:23 gave the 49ers a 56-46 lead. A lead the 49ers would never look back on. LBSU steadily increae the lead to to 72-51 on two free throws by McCutcheon with 1:40 left, leading by as many as 21 points in the half. Utah State closed the half on an 8-0 run to lead 35-27 at the half. LBSU managed just a 32 percent clip from the field, compared to a 52 shooting percentage by the Aggies. The 49ers close out their Pyramid schedule on Saturday when they host Idaho at 7 p.m. LBSU will also attempt to break the women's basketball attendance record that night as well as honor its seniors following the contest. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
