49ers Rout Riverside 82-43
RIVERSIDE, CA-- Long Beach State (14-6, 9-3 Big West) easily opened up a four-game road trip outdistancing host UC Riverside (11-9, 6-5 Big West) 82-43 on Thursday night. LBSU used double digit runs to start each of the halves to put the contest out of reach. "Our defensive pressure set the tone and that has been our trademark this year," said second-year Head Coach Mary Hegarty. "That puts us in a position to be successful, especially on the offensive end, where we are able to run and get in transition. I am pleased with this win, on the road, and against a good UC Riverside team that was only a game behind us in the standings." Aisha Hollans (Berkeley, CA) produced her eighth double-double of the season thanks to 18 points and 12 rebounds, to lead three 49ers in double figures. Crystal McCutcheon (Lancaster) added 14 points and Candice Wilson (Sacramento) had 11 points. It was the team's largest margin of victory of the season. The Beach shot 49 percent for the game, holding UCR to just 28 percent shooting. LBSU also outrebounded the Highlanders 44-to-27. With the 14-6 start, the 49ers equaled their win total from last season (14-16) and matched the program's best record at this point in the season since 1991-92. It was also the sixth time in conference play LBSU had held an opponent under 50 points.
The Beach opened the second half, much like the first, going on a 16-3 run to start the second frame, as a Hollans' short-range jumper gave LBSU a 59-27 lead with 10:59 remaing. The 49ers opened the game up 19-4. The 49ers nearly doubled up UCR at the half, leading 43-24 , while committing just four first half turnovers. LBSU shot 53 percent compared to just a 30 percent clip by the Highlanders. A Wilson three-point play gave LBSU an early 13-4 lead with 15:24 left, as the 49ers built a 19-4 lead over the first six and a half minutes of play. LBSU would remain in control for the rest of the first half, as Glaser would convert two free throws off a technical foul on the UCR bench to give the 49ers a 36-16 lead with 3:40 left. The 49ers continue its four-game roadtrip on Saturday when they travel to CS Fullerton for a contest at 7 p.m. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
