Quickly: The Long Beach State women's basketball team (6-4) hosts South Dakota State (7-5), before traveling to UC Davis on Monday, Jan. 2. The 49ers have never faced South Dakota State, and are 6-0 all-time vs. UC Davis. LBSU defeated the Aggies twice last season by scores of 73-47 and 70-59. Head Coach Mary Hegarty needs just one more win to reach 200 for her career. Last Week in Review Pt. I: The last double overtime game was Feb. 23, 1996 at Pacific...Jayme Connors became the seventh player in program history, and first since Melissa Gower in 1995 to pull down 20-plus rebounds (23). It was also a career-high for Connors. The 38-point win over Southern on Dec. 19 marked the first time since January 7, 1987 that Long Beach State held its opponent under 40 points (96-33 vs. San Jose State). The 38-point victory was the second largest margin of victory in The Walter Pyramid (49, vs. CS Fullerton on Jan. 22, 1999). The 38 points were the fewest ever by an opponent in 11-year history of the Walter Pyramid as well.
Last Week in Review Pt. II: (LBSU 81, Pepperdine 75 (2ot), Dec. 21) Led by a career-high 23 points by Fernanda Santos, and clutch shooting by Karina Figueroa, the Long Beach State women's basketball team defeated the Pepperdine Waves, 81-75, in double overtime on Wednesday night from The Walter Pyramid. The last double overtime game was Feb. 23, 1996 at Pacific. Long Beach State (6-4) erased a 12-point deficit (57-45) with 3:53 left in regulation, with a 13-1 run to force overtime, capped off by a Figueroa running layup with five seconds left. The 49ers rallied again in the first overtime, this time from a four-point deficit, 63-59, with 1:15 left to play. Once again it was Figueroa who kept The Beach alive with two free throws and a running jump shot in the key with four seconds left to force the second overtime. The 49ers controlled the second overtime, and outscored the Waves, 16-10 in the final frame. Kaiti O'Brien hit two free throws to put LBSU up by seven with 19 seconds. Crystal McCutcheon added 24 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. It was the third straight game that McCutcheon had 20 or more points. The 49ers jumped out to a 10-2 lead after a McCutcheon jumper at the 12:29 mark, before Pepperdine went on a 12-0 run, capped off by a Jasmane Clarendon foul shot, with 9:36 remaining in the half. Long Beach State tied the score at 14-14 after a Figueroa jumper, but fell behind by five, 19-14, after Taylor Smith's three-pointer. Four consecutive Santos free throws gave The Beach a one-point lead, 22-21, and a Connors jump shot in the key gave LBSU a two-point lead at the half. The 49ers pulled down 27 rebounds in the stanza, 10 courtesy of Connors.
(LBSU 76, Southern 38, Dec. 19) Long Beach State women's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak with a 76-38 win over Southern University, Monday night from The Walter Pyramid. The 38-point win marked the first time since January 7, 1987 that Long Beach State held its opponent under 40 points (96-33 vs. San Jose State). Jayme Connors pulled down a game-high eight boards. The 49ers shot 42 percent from the field and pulled down a season-high 50 rebounds. Long Beach State held leads in the second half of 19 and 21 in the early going, and increased its lead to 30, 61-31, after a Karina Figueroa jump shot at the 9:24 mark. The Jaguars were held scoreless for a five-minute span in the second half, and ended up shooting just 30 percent for the game. Southern opened the game with a 5-0 lead, before Long Beach State went on 11-0 run, capped off by a McCutcheon jumper, to take an 11-5 lead at the 14:33 mark. The 49ers extended their lead to 10 (21-10) after a pair of Fernanda Santos free throws, and held their biggest lead, 15, after McCutcheon nailed a three-pointer to give them a 26-11 lead with 3:19 left in the half. McCutcheon totaled 14 points in the first stanza. The 49ers held Southern to just 26 percent shooting from the field (8-for-31). 49ers Ink Six for the 2006-07 Season: Long Beach State women's basketball head coach, Mary Hegarty, announced that six players, Lauren Bagley, Sherissa Bayes, Lindsey Beckner, Nondi Johnson, Lauren Sims, and Ally Wade have all signed National Letters-of-Intent to enroll at Long Beach State for the 2006-07 season. "It's a very talented and deep recruiting class," said Hegarty. "We addressed all of our needs at the post position with four new post players. This class has a strong work ethic and strong academic backgrounds. They will fit nicely with the players we have returning next season. This class will help take our program to the next level."
Big West Pre-Season Predictions are Out: The Big West Conference had its annual media day on Nov. 2 and the Long Beach State women's basketball team was picked to finish second by both the conference's eight coaches and the media. Senior Crystal McCutcheon also made the pre-season all-conference team. In the media poll, the women compiled 67 points, with one first place vote behind UCSB's 79 points and nine first place votes. In the coaches poll, the women received two first place votes and 43 overall points to UCSB's 46.
Four Double-Headers this Season: The 49er women will play four doubleheaders with the men's team this season. The first will be on December 30 as the women host South Dakota State (5 pm) and the men Cornell (7:30 pm). On January 28 both teams will tangle with UC Irvine in The Walter Pyramid (2 & 5 pm). February 11 will be Homecoming on the 49er campus and the women will take on Pacific (3 pm) while the men tangle with UCSB (5:30 pm). The final doubleheader will be on March 4 at UC Irvine (4 & 7 pm).
The Beach on TV: When Long Beach State tangles with UC Santa Barbara on February 18 in Santa Barbara, the game will be aired on Fox Sports West 2 at 5:00 p.m.
The 05-06 Schedule: Five of Long Beach State's non-conference opponents advanced to the NCAA post-season last season, including TCU, Houston, USC, Montana, and Richmond. Conference rival, UC Santa Barbara also advanced to the NCAA post-season as well.
