LONG BEACH, CA -- Led by a career-high 23 points by Fernanda Santos, and clutch shooting by Karina Figueroa, the Long Beach State women's basketball team defeated the Pepperdine Waves, 81-75, in double overtime on Wednesday night from The Walter Pyramid. The last double overtime game was Feb. 23, 1996 at Pacific.
Long Beach State (6-4) erased a 12-point deficit (57-45) with 3:53 left in regulation, with a 13-1 run to force overtime, capped off by a Figueroa running layup with five seconds left.
The 49ers rallied again in the first overtime, this time from a four-point deficit, 63-59, with 1:15 left to play. Once again it was Figueroa who kept The Beach alive with two free throws and a running jump shot in the key with four seconds left to force the second overtime. The 49ers controlled the second overtime, and outscored the Waves, 16-10 in the final frame. Kaiti O'Brien hit two free throws to put LBSU up by seven with 19 seconds.
Crystal McCutcheon added 24 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. It was the third straight game that McCutcheon had 20 or more points. Jayme Connors became the seventh player in program history, and first since Melissa Gower in 1995 to pull down 20-plus rebounds (23). It was also a career-high for Connors. Figueroa poured in 20 points as well. Santos turned in a double-double with 11 rebounds as well.
Teiosha George led Pepperdine (3-8) with 16 points in the loss.
The 49ers jumped out to a 10-2 lead after a McCutcheon jumper at the 12:29 mark, before Pepperdine went on a 12-0 run, capped off by a Jasmane Clarendon foul shot, with 9:36 remaining in the half. Long Beach State tied the score at 14-14 after a Figueroa jumper, but fell behind by five, 19-14, after Taylor Smith's three-pointer. Four consecutive Santos free throws gave The Beach a one-point lead, 22-21, and a Connors jump shot in the key gave LBSU a two-point lead at the half. The 49ers pulled down 27 rebounds in the stanza, 10 courtesy of Connors.
