Beach Routs Southern, 76-38 McCutcheon Pours in 23 Points

LONG BEACH, CA -- The Long Beach State women's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak with a 76-38 win over Southern University, Monday night from The Walter Pyramid.
The 38-point win marked the first time since January 7, 1987 that Long Beach State held its opponent under 40 points (96-33 vs. San Jose State). The 38-point victory was the second largest margin of victory in The Walter Pyramid (49, vs. CS Fullerton on Jan. 22, 1999). The 38 points were the fewest ever by an opponent in 11-year history of the Walter Pyramid as well.
Crystal McCutcheon led LBSU (5-4) with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field. In fact McCutcheon connected for three three-pointers to tie Jinga Gosschalk for sixth all-time with 79 career three-point field goals made. Jeannie Saunders chipped in with 12 points as well. Jayme Connors pulled down a game-high eight boards.
The 49ers shot 42 percent from the field and pulled down a season-high 50 rebounds. Fredrieka Lewis led Southern (3-4) with 16 points in the losing effort.
Long Beach State held leads in the second half of 19 and 21 in the early going, and increased its lead to 30, 61-31, after a Karina Figueroa jump shot at the 9:24 mark. The Jaguars were held scoreless for a five-minute span in the second half, and ended up shooting just 30 percent for the game.
Southern opened the game with a 5-0 lead, before Long Beach State went on 11-0 run, capped off by a McCutcheon jumper, to take an 11-5 lead at the 14:33 mark. The 49ers extended their lead to 10 (21-10) after a pair of Fernanda Santos free throws, and held their biggest lead, 15, after McCutcheon nailed a three-pointer to give them a 26-11 lead with 3:19 left in the half. McCutcheon totaled 14 points in the first stanza. The 49ers held Southern to just 26 percent shooting from the field (8-for-31).
The 49ers return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 21 vs. Pepperdine at 7:30 p.m. from The Walter Pyramid.
