LMU Gets Past LBSU, 81-72 McCutcheon Pours in Career-High 29 Points

LONG BEACH, CA -- The Long Beach State women's basketball team fell to the LMU Lions, 81-72, at The Walter Pyramid on Saturday afternoon. It was the first loss at home this season and the first home loss to a non-conference opponent since Dec. 9, 2003.
Crystal McCutcheon paced The Beach (4-4) with a career-high 29 points and a career-high eight steals, while Jeannie Saunders poured in a season-high 16 points in the losing effort. Amanda Patton led LMU (3-6) with 29 points. The Lions shot 52 percent from the field, and out-rebounded the 49ers, 42-27.
Long Beach State rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half, and cut the LMU lead down to six points (53-59) after two Saunders free throws and a layup with 8:44 left in the game. A pair of McCutcheon free throws pulled LBSU to within two, 62-64 at the 5:41 mark, before the Lions pushed their lead back to eight, after a Bianca Ziemann layup with 1:25 left in regulation. The Lions converted eight straight foul shots over the last 33 seconds to preserve the nine-point victory.
LMU nearly shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, en route to a 41-28 halftime lead. The Lions unlocked an 8-8 tie with an 11-5 run, capped off by a Patton three-pointer, to take a 19-13 lead at the 12:04 mark. LMU extended its lead to double-digits, and led by as many as 17 (37-20) after a Rachael Ziemann three-pointer with 4:14 left in the period. Two consecutive layups by Meghan Griffith and Jayme Connors cut the halftime deficit to 13.
The 49ers return to action on Monday, Dec. 19 vs. Southern at 7:30 p.m. from The Walter Pyramid.
